Bass Fishing Charter + Guide in Nearby Kawartha Lakes
Our Guide to Bass Fishing
Bass fishing is arguably the most popular type of fishing. Before going out on any fishing trip, it is important to research the type of fish species at your chosen location, as well as weather and water conditions. We have put together a few key pointers and have created a bass fishing guide to help make your bass fishing trip a success. By following along with our bass fishing guide you’ll learn the right techniques to help you become as skilled as possible prior to your fishing trip.
Bass Fishing Gear
There is probably more gear out on the market for bass fishing than for any other species. It can be overwhelming walking through the aisles upon aisles of lures and equipment at your favourite fishing store. To simplify things, it helps to break down lures into three categories: Floating, Diving and Sinking.
Floating lures are lures that typically are retrieved along the surface of the water. These include a wide variety of frog imitating type lures as well as buzzbaits, and popping/walking type lures. Diving lures, such as crankbaits and jerkbaits are equipped with a plastic lip at the line tie, this feature allows them to dive down under the surface when retrieved. Sinking type baits are often paired with a lead or tungsten weight which allows the presentation to bump or bounce along the bottom. It’s a good idea to have a few different options from each of the three types of lures so you can vary your presentations. A medium action 6 to 7 foot rod with 12lb test line is a good multi-technique combo for any of the fishing styles.
Bass Fishing Season & Ideal Weather Conditions
In some areas, Bass fishing season remains open all year long. Be sure to consult the regulations for your area before heading out. In preparation for your fishing trip, you will need to understand how the different seasons affect bass behaviour. Bass tend to migrate to different areas of the lake as the seasons change. Water temperature, weed growth and forage force bass to different areas during certain times of the year. Early summer and fall are known as the best seasons for bass fishing. During the hot “dog days” of summer, warmer water temperatures force bass to seek out cooler water. Often shady areas under docks, bridges and lily pads are good areas to try during hot spells. As water temperatures fluctuate, bass will move to areas more suitable, this also applies to the baitfish they prey upon. During cold spells, water temperatures tend to fluctuate less in deeper water which provides a stable area for the bass to reside. Bass fishing tends to be better in low - light conditions, so make the best of your opportunities to fish at dusk or dawn, floating type lures are especially productive at these times. Water clarity also plays an important factor in bass location and the techniques used to entice a strike. As a general rule of thumb, slowing down your presentation gives bass the extra time they need to locate your lure. Additionally, using lures that have some sort of vibration or built in rattles can also pay off.
